Incarnate Milkweed - Organic
(0)
$4.49
Unit price / perCommon milkweed ( Asclepias incarnata ) is a graceful and valuable native perennial for natural gardens. More delicate than its common cousin ( Asclepias syriaca ), it displays its umbels of deep pink flowers in summer, borne on slender, leafy stems. It flowers slightly later, extending the blooming season for the benefit of pollinators.
Sought after by monarch butterflies as a nesting site, it also supports a rich diversity of beneficial insects. Unlike common milkweed, it grows singly or in small clumps , without colonizing, making it ideal for mixed garden design.
It thrives in rich, moist environments such as riverbanks, ditches, or freshly irrigated areas. Its narrow foliage and elegant silhouette bring verticality and movement to naturalistic flowerbeds. A valuable ally for gardeners who wish to embrace life in all its transformations .

- Growing climate: Temperate to cool
- Sowing difficulty level: Medium
- Care required: Occasional
Note: Prefers cool, humid locations, sensitive to drought.
Used by some indigenous nations as a medicinal plant (notably in infusions as a vermifuge), swamp milkweed is also one of those edible plants to be handled with respect: the young shoots, leaves, flower buds and young fruits can be consumed in small quantities and well cooked.
Like all milkweeds, it contains cardiac glycosides that can be toxic in excess; it's a plant that needs to be understood before being tasted. It invites us to reconnect with ancient knowledge, to observe, to taste sparingly… and to pass on the story of this plant woven into the monarch butterfly cycle.
