L'astragale (Astragalus canadensis) est une plante vivace indigène, atteignant jusqu'à 90 cm de hauteur. Ce fixateur d'azote, appartenant à la famille des fabacées, joue un rôle essentiel dans l'amélioration de la fertilité du sol. Semis et culture

Une stratification froide de 30 jours et une légère scarification sont nécessaires pour assurer la germination des semences d’astragale.

Scarification : frottez doucement les semences entre deux feuilles de papier sablé fin, sans trop appuyer pour éviter d’endommager les semences. On ne veut pas retirer toute l’enveloppe externe de la graine (le tégument), mais seulement l’abimer pour faciliter l’imbibition, soit l’absorption de l’eau par la graine.

Stratification : Mélangez ensuite les graines avec un substrat humide (vermiculite, perlite ou sable) et placez-les dans un sac en plastique au réfrigérateur pendant 30 jours.

Semez à une profondeur de 5 mm.

Les graines stratifiées germeront en quelques jours et les jeunes plantes développent immédiatement une racine pivotante assez profonde à la recherche d’eau. Prévoyez donc des contenants assez profonds (5 à 6 pouces) pour permettre à cette racine de se développer.

Vous pouvez aussi semer directement en place à l’automne, la scarification et la stratification se feront ainsi naturellement à l’extérieur, mais le taux de germination peut être réduit.
