Le clèthre à feuilles d'aulne (Clethra alnifolia) est un arbuste apprécié pour ses épis de fleurs blanches parfumées qui attirent une grande variété de pollinisateurs, notamment les abeilles et les papillons, pendant l’été. Il peut atteindre environ 1,5 mètre de hauteur, formant des massifs grâce à ses racines drageonnantes. Semis et culture

La clèthre, comme d’autres espèces avec de très petites semences, a besoin de lumière et d’un haut niveau d’humidité pour assurer le succès de la germination. Il est donc beaucoup plus facile de démarrer les semis à l’intérieur que de tenter un semis extérieur.

Saupoudrez les graines en surface d’un mélange de terreau à semis à haute teneur en mousse de tourbe bien humidifié, ou faites votre propre mélange avec une part de mousse de tourbe, une part de perlite et deux parts de terreau à semis. Vaporiser un peu d’eau sur les semences pour assurer un bon contact avec le terreau. Couvrez le contenant d’un dôme de plastique (ou placez-le dans un sac plastique) et placez-le sous des lumières de croissance. Réglez les lumières pour qu’elles soient allumées pendant 16 heures par jour.

Une fois que les graines auront germé, ajourez le dôme de plastique ou faites une ouverture au sac pour laisser passer un peu d’air, mais assurez-vous de ne pas laisser le substrat s’assécher. Après quelques semaines, quand les plants auront formé leurs premières vraies feuilles, donnez-leur une légère dose d’engrais (l’hydrolysat de poisson est idéal) et égouttez soigneusement l’excès l’eau avant de replacer le dôme de plastique.

Cette méthode permet de maintenir un taux d’humidité élevée nécessaire, mais utilisez votre jugement pour s’assurer de ne pas non plus créer des conditions propices à l’apparition de moisissures à la fonte des semis. (voir: https://jardinierparesseux.com/2017/04/06/la-fonte-des-semis/)

L’utilisation de la mousse de tourbe aide justement ici à abaisser le pH du substrat, les champignons étant moins susceptibles de proliférer dans un milieu plus acide.

Les semis peuvent être divisés et repiqués individuellement lorsqu’ils mesurent 1 pouce de hauteur. Ils n’ont alors plus besoin du dôme de plastique.

De croissance rapide, la clèthre devrait commencer à fleurir après 2 ou 3 ans.
