Jardins de l'écoumène
Betony officinalis - Organic
(0)
$4.49
Unit price / perNative to Europe and temperate Asia , this herbaceous perennial has established itself over the centuries as a valuable medicinal plant . It is recognizable by its upright stems , its slightly puckered lanceolate leaves , and especially its purple-pink flowers in dense spikes that bloom from July to September .
Hardy and easy to grow, it prefers cool, slightly moist, well-drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded location. Its bushy, compact, and elegant habit makes it ideal for borders, light woodland areas, cool rock gardens, or at the base of shrubs . Generous yet discreet, it attracts a rich diversity of pollinators —bees, butterflies, hoverflies—thus strengthening the ecological resilience of the garden.
It self-seeds moderately without becoming invasive, and harmonizes easily with other perennials, bringing structure, color and tranquility to any growing space.

- Growing climate: Temperate climate.
- Sowing difficulty level: Easy.
- Care required: Occasional.Note: Tolerates poor and dry soils well once established.
Long used as a calming infusion to support the nervous system, promote sleep, or relieve headaches, common betony was an integral part of peasant pharmacopoeias from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Its dried leaves were also used in certain ritual practices or as soothing incense.
Although less used in cooking today, it retains medicinal value of interest in natural health approaches, particularly for its digestive, tonic and mild anti-inflammatory properties.
It thus embodies the subtle union between rustic beauty, ancient use and ecological benefit, serving gardeners attentive to living things.
