Native to tropical America, cleome graces gardens as a vibrant and airy annual. Its refined flowers, in shades of white, pink, or rosy purple, form spectacular terminal clusters reminiscent of tiny floral spiders with their long, slender stamens. This aerial, upright habit has also earned it the nickname " spider flower ."

Cleome grows on vigorous stems that can exceed 1 meter in height, with decorative, slightly lobed foliage. It thrives in sunny locations and rich, light, and well-drained soil. Heat-tolerant, it can be planted in the garden after the last frost to provide continuous flowering from late June until the first cold weather. Planted in groups, it creates a striking, structured mass effect, perfect for tall borders or as a backdrop in a flower bed. Its nectar-rich blooms attract a multitude of pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

  • Growing climate: Temperate to warm climate
  • Sowing difficulty level: Easy
  • Care required: Occasional

Note: Sensitive to frost, prefers a sunny and sheltered location.

Beyond its slender silhouette and spidery flowers, Cleome spinosa carries within it an ancient heritage rooted in the tropical cultures of the Americas. In its native regions, it has long been recognized for its medicinal properties: soothing poultices, herbal teas, or syrups to relieve fevers, headaches, or respiratory ailments. These traditional uses have been passed down from generation to generation, where the plant was both a source of care and a daily companion.

It is also found in forgotten cultural practices, as a discreet ingredient in certain hunting preparations, a reminder of the ancient links between humans, plants, and the land. While its decorative beauty has since conquered gardens worldwide, Cleome spinosa serves as a reminder that behind every flower sometimes lies a medicine, a memory, or ancient knowledge.
