Organic Daikon Radish
(0)
$4.49
Unit price / perNative to East Asia, the Daikon radish is a large white radish that has long been a staple in vegetable gardens. Its elongated, smooth, and pristine white root contrasts with its bright green leaves, which stand upright above the soil. In a harmonious garden, it silently accompanies the cycle of the seasons, taking root deep in the fertile soil.
In the vegetable garden, Daikon stands out for its rapid growth in late summer and early autumn. It thrives in well-drained, cool soil, where it develops a crisp, juicy, and rather mild root, less pungent than small spring radishes depending on its maturity and growing conditions. It's a reliable plant for extending harvests into autumn and providing a consistent supply of produce in the garden.

- Growing climate: Cool season
- Sowing difficulty level: Easy
- Care required: Occasional
- Growth: Rapid growth
Note: Daikon radish prefers the cool temperatures of late summer and autumn to produce tender, good-sized roots.
Daikon radish is widely used in East Asian cuisines. Its white root can be eaten raw, grated or thinly sliced, in salads or as a crunchy side dish. It is also well-suited to cooking: in soups, stews, or stir-fries, where its flavor becomes milder.
It is also often preserved through lacto-fermentation or pickling, which allows it to be used in cooking beyond the harvest season. The root can be kept for a while in a cool, humid place or in the vegetable drawer, according to traditional storage practices.
Some culinary traditions also value the tops, used cooked or as an accompaniment, when the leaves are young and tender.
