The Btk group of bacteria ( Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki ) is used as a biological control agent against lepidopteran pests. It provides effective control of caterpillars in ornamental trees (tent moths, loopers, wax moths, leafrollers, etc.), in vegetable gardens (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, corn, leeks, etc.) and in fruit trees and shrubs.

Bats play a vital role in ecosystems by controlling pest insect populations, as each bat can consume approximately 600 insects per hour! However, bat populations are declining due to habitat loss. This bat house can accommodate 20 to 30 bats. To ensure they benefit fully, install it before the beginning of April, before the birthing season. If bats have taken up residence in your attic, installing this bat house might encourage them to relocate.

Diatoms are microscopic algae encased in a siliceous shell. Diatomaceous earth (whose active ingredient is silicon dioxide) is made from these fossilized algae ground into a fine powder. Its particles are a multitude of tiny, sharp crystals. It is used as a barrier on the ground or sprinkled on foliage to control soft-bodied pests that crawl or walk: ants, earwigs, slugs, Colorado potato beetles, and the larval stages of countless insects. Upon contact with diatomaceous earth, the insect is cut in several places and eventually dies from dehydration.

• Pests may take a few days to die; those that ingest diatomaceous earth die more quickly due to perforation of their digestive system.
