The Helios radish is a spring radish with a round root, recognizable by its bright yellow skin that contrasts with the greenery of the vegetable garden. Beneath this sunny color lies a white, crisp, and sweet flesh, promising the first harvests of the season in a vibrant and nourishing garden.

Like all radishes of the genus Raphanus sativus , it forms a rosette of leaves close to the ground, then buries its root at a shallow depth in fertile soil. It is an early variety, well-suited to staggered sowings, and consistently follows the cycle of the cooler seasons: sow it early, harvest it quickly, and then free up space for other companion plants in the vegetable garden.

In a harmonious garden, the Helios radish acts as a messenger of spring: in just a few weeks, it transforms the simple act of sowing into the daily pleasure of harvesting. Its benevolent presence is well-suited to an approach rooted in observation: one follows its rapid germination, learns about the soil, moisture, and light, and adjusts one's techniques for ever more bountiful harvests.

  • Growing climate: Cool season
  • Sowing difficulty level: Easy
  • Care required: Occasional
  • Growth: Rapid growth

Annotation: Short-cycle spring radish variety, ideal for staggered sowings at the beginning and end of the cool season.

The Helios radish is mainly eaten raw, like other spring radishes. Its yellow skin and white flesh make a lovely contrast in mixed salads, crudité platters, or simply sliced thinly and served with a little salt and butter.

It can be sliced or quartered to add color and crunch to green salads, cereal bowls, or vegetable sandwiches. Young leaves, if fresh and healthy, can also be used in small quantities in soups or sautéed like a leafy green.

Like other radishes, Helios lends itself to quick pickling in a vinegary brine, which allows it to be kept for a few days in the refrigerator while enriching the flavor palette of home cooking.
