Number of seeds

Originally from Africa and popularized in Portuguese and Brazilian cuisines, the Piri-Piri pepper has earned a prominent place in kitchen gardens for its small but very spicy fruit. In our climate, it is cultivated like a warm-season pepper, producing numerous small, elongated fruits that ripen from green to bright red.

In the garden, it's a modestly sized plant that's well-suited to compact vegetable plots and containers. Its green foliage and abundant fruit add a splash of color to the heart of summer. In organic gardening, the Piri-Piri pepper integrates naturally into a diverse food garden where, with care, only what's needed to spice up everyday dishes is harvested.

  • Growing climate: Warm season
  • Sowing difficulty level: Medium
  • Care required: Regular
  • Growth: Summer growth

Note: Sensitive to cold: do not expose to frost and wait until the soil is well warmed before planting in open ground.

Piri-piri peppers are primarily used as a very hot condiment. The small red berries can be eaten fresh in very small quantities, or more commonly dried, ground into flakes or powder, or macerated in oil or vinegar to prepare sauces and marinades. They are emblematic of certain African and Portuguese cuisines, particularly for adding flavor to grilled poultry, sauces, and stews. The berries keep well once dried, in an airtight container away from light.
